A A spiny upright perennial with glossy, white-marbled foliage and thistle-like grayish-blue flower heads. There is a basal rosettes of oblong, cordate-based, serrate, dark green leaves and smaller, spiny-lobed stem leaves. Each flower head is subtended by a narrow, spiky collar of pale blue bracts.
