Appearance

Cap initially white but tending to become beige centrally; surface finely flecked and tending to crack as it ages; thick and fleshy; initially domed but flattening as it opens, reaching 7 cm in diameter. Gills initially pink when closed, turning brown on opening; free; dense. Stalk up to 9 cm long and 2 cm in diameter, with bulbous base; smooth, with prominent double ring. Base stains a strong yellow immediately on sectioning, as does cap where it is bruised. Spore print dark rusty red; spores dark coloured in KOH, elliptical with small nipple and no germ pore; smooth surfaced; 5.8-6.2 x 3.8-4.2 um (mean = 6.0 x 4.0 um; n=11). Cystidea small and bulbous.

Habitat

June: In grass in front of holly trees near the Oak. September: widely distributed around the garden both front and back.
