Wood ear fungus

Auricularia auricula-judea


Appearance

Small (up to 4 cm in width) ear-shaped fungus with domed and smooth reddish-brown upward-facing surface and paler pinkish brown, wrinkled downward-facing surface. No stalk. Initially small and cup-shaped. Spores sausage-shaped, 16-18 x 5-7 um; wall smooth.

Habitat

Growing directly on rotting hardwood logs or detached branches. The figured example is a large colony found growing on an old rotting branch of oak behind the pond rockery in January 2022. Also found on rotting fallen branches in wooded area at bottom of garden and under cut leaf beech.
