St George's mushroom

Appearance

Clustered mushrooms with domed, fleshy cap up to 40 mm diameter with inrolled margin; pale fawn in colour staining slightly more yellow-brown with age; surface slightly felted when fresh and much nibbled! Gills adnate to slightly decurrent; very crowded and occasionally forked; white in colour with smooth edge. Stalk short and thick (13 x 40 mm); pale coloured like cap and vertically streaked.

Spore print white. Basidia 4-spored. Cystidia absent. Spores small - 4.6-5.0 x 2.8-3.2 um (mean 4.8 x 3.0 um, n = 20; Q = 1.6); inamyloid; colourless, and translucent but with oil inclusions staining in Metzer's; Ellipsoidal to ovate, with smooth surface.

Habitat

Growing at base of yew hedge between front and back gardens, forming a partial circle.
