Appearance

Cap up to 90 mm diameter; low domed to almost flat; flesh white and coarsely flecked with dark-edged scales. Gills white, dense and free. Stem long and relatively slender; white with well developed double ring; a short, wide bulbous base. Cap and stem flesh staining red when cut. Has longer and much more slender stem than C. brunneum.

Spore print white. Spores staining dark brown in Metzer’s reagent; ellipsoidal with off-centre apiculus and central germ pore without cap at opposite end; smooth walled; 7.4-8.4 x 5.0-5.9 um, mean = 8.1 x 5.4 um, N = 12; Q = 1.5.

Habitat

Growing within soil and leaf litter under the cut-leaf beech and under the holly trees in the front garden in depp wood litter.
