Firerug inkcap

Copriellus domesticus

Appearance

Solitary and extremely large for an inkcap - 75 mm diameter, domed with orange-brown centre and white to grey outer part where it tends to split and curl; thin fleshed and densely radially striate in outer part; no trace of veil or obvious hairs on cap surface. Gills more or less free, very dense, more or less black. Stem 140 x 7 mm, white, smooth and expanding downwards to a distinct blub about twice the width of the stem. Spore print dark brown-black; gills deliquescent over time. Spores a dark brown; ellipsoidal with large terminal germ pore and no apiculus; 7.0-8.2 x 4.1-4.8 um, mean = 7.7 x 4.4 um; Q = 1.7.

Identity not certain as there is no trace of veil scales on the cap (due to age and wear possibly?).

Habitat

Growing from beneath a small, rotten tree branch near the back gate and also from an old log by the pond.
