Appearance

Medium-sized fungus 3-5 cm diameter. Cap dry, finely wrinkled, with a toothed rim formed from fragments of the ring; creamy yellow in colour with a darker, more orange central hub; weakly domed. Gills adnate, white to light cream; unbranched. Stalk creamy orange to dark rusty in colour and scaley, especially towards cap; hollow.  

Spore print white. Spores bean-shaped to amygdaloidal, 5.1-6.5 x 2.9-3.4 um; mean = 5.5 x 3.1 um, n = 20; Q = 1.77. Cap cells sphaerical (sphaerocysts), especially in small developing forms; less evident in full grown individuals. No cystidia. No anthroconidia below cuticle, although one hyphal strand was partitioned into cuboidal sections.

Habitat

Waxcap meadow: common. Also found in mossy paths just beyond the trellis.
