Appearance

Cap 3-5 cm diameter, initially domed with a central umbo, eventually becoming flattish with a rather wavy irregular outline; chestnut brown in colour; surface smooth and slightly waxy; radial striations become visible towards the margins. Gills pale cream-coloured becoming more cinnamon with age; some speckling along rim and upper sides; emarginate, cream in colour, rather strongly pendulous; with short butresses at base. Stem to 50 x 6 mm; fibrillose, pale brown with vertical pale streaks; stiff, cylindrical; no ring. Spore print cinnamon-orange; spores subequant, polygonal, often pentagonal; hyaline in KOH, orange-brown in Metzer’s; 7.8-9.8 x 6.1-8.0 um, mean = 8.7 x 7.0, N = 21; Q = 1.2. No cystidia. Basidia 4-spored.

Habitat

Waxcap meadow. Moderately common.
