Velvet shank

Appearance

Cap up to 5 cm diameter; slimey surfaced; gently domed to flattish with slight undulose surface, slightly depressed centrally in mature specimens and rim downturned; strong honey-orange in colour, duller when dry or old; striate around margins. Gills adnate; white, but becoming a pale orange-yellow in colour with age; and robust. Stalk relatively slender; yellow-pale orange when young becoming dark chestnut brown in colour and hollow; covered in fine, velvety down so soft to touch.  

Spore print white. Spores elongate and rather irregular in shape; rich in oil inclusions; 6.0-8.0 x 2.6-3.1 um, mean = 6.7 x 2.9 um N = 16; Q = 2.0-2.7, mean = 2.3. Cheilocystidia present; lageniform to cylindrical; pleurocystidia sparser but similar.

Habitat

Growing from stump of sycamore tree near greenhouse and from old rotting log in wooded area (Jan-Feb 2022) and from branch stump on living Bramley apple tree (Jan-Feb 2022, 2023). Also growing from stumps of holly tree in front garden (Jan 2023).
