Bolete mould or Golden hypomyces

Hypomyces chrysospermus


Appearance

Encrusting mould fungus that has a white knobbly surface that turns a bright sulfur yellow. Resting spores are yellow, more or less circular and covered in projecting warts; size (without warts) 8.8-10.9 x 8.9-11.8 um, mean 10 x 10.2 um, N = 13; size from wart tips = 9-12.8 x 10.7-13.8 um, mean 11.8 x 12.3 um, N = 13.

Habitat

Encrusting indeterminate bolete fruiting body growing under a beech tree; probably Xerocomus as this is is the only bolete genus recorded from this locality. Cross-section of bolete hymeniun seen. Definitely found attacking red-cracking bolete (Xenocomellus cisalpinus) close to cut leaf beech in mid September.
