Cap to 40 mm, broad with rounded and inturned rim and flat to slightly indented centrally; a little slimy to waxy in feel and pale rose-colour when moist but drying and ageing to a dull pale brown; zoned with concentric colour bands. In old specimens strongly funnel-shaped with concave disc. Gills a cream colour and adnate; secretes abundant white latex immediately on cutting that dries an off white colour. Latex with a very strong bitter and burning after-taste. Stalk massive and solid, oval in cross-section; no bulb at base and no ring; surface smooth when fresh. Spore print white. Spores small and subcircular with ridges and warts on surface; 6.0 x 5.5 um. Large cylindrical cystidia abundant along gill surfaces giving them a rather 'hairy' appearance. ;
