Lepiota subincarnata


Appearance

Rather small Lepiota lacking a clear ring. Cap to 5 cm in diameter, initially high-domed but opening to become low-domed in mature specimens; overall cap with a slightly pinkish-orange hue; centre a dull reddish-brown but over most of cap the cuticle is broken into small darker brown flecks over a pinkish skin; deeper flesh white; edge of cap with sparse white veil remnants. Gills dense, white, ageing to a flesh colour; free; unbranched. Stem broadening downwards, 65 mm long by 8 mm diameter near cap to 16 mm diameter at base; hollow; staining red where damaged; upper part fibrous and white, lower part with many reddish brown scales; no proper ring developed at any stage.

Spore print white. Spores small, elliptical, smooth surfaced and without germ pore but with asymmetric apiculus; definitely not bullet-shaped nor fusiform; dextrinoid; 5.9-6.8 x 3.5-4.0 um (mean = 6.2 x 3.8 um, n = 18). Basidia 4-spored. No obvious cystidia found. Hyphae without clamps.

Habitat

Under oak tree in woody debris.
