Appearance

Cap up to 50 mm diameter, with a dirty mottled appearance; off-white in colour with a darker centre that is mottled brown and fibrous; paler and often with brown spotting towards edge in smaller caps; dry; edge inturned; blackens on bruising and flesh darkens on cutting. Gills off-white with dense unbranched gills; 12-15 gills in a 1 cm length at edge; adnexed with pale gill edges; rather fragile. Stalk to 60 x 8 mm diameter; off-white and longitudinally striated; solid in cross-section; no ring; slightly pruinose at top and well developed hyphae at base.

Spore print white, spores hyaline, staining yellow in Metzer's; ovate without apiculus or germ pore; surface finely but distinctly granular; 6.0-8.2 x 3.4-4.3 um, mean = 6.6 x 3.8 um, N = 33; Q =1.8. Basidia 4-spored. No cystidia.

Habitat

In unimproved grass amongst trees (apple, walnut and beech).
