Appearance

Desiccated and wrinkled when first found, but cap revitalised after moistening. Cap to 20 mm in diameter; white, domed with slightly inturned edge and depressed centre; radial grooves well developed towards the outside so that the outer part of the disc has a quilted appearance. Gills pale flesh colour; all gills simple and reaching the stem where they fuse together to form a collarium that encircles the stem; no sign of secondary gills even in the largest specimen; adnate. Stalk black and twisted; fibrous – very tough; thin >2 mm in diameter and up to 4 cm long. Spore print white. Spores elongate pip-like with one end projecting as a point; 8.3-9.9 x 3.2-4.3 um (mean = 9.0 x 3.6 um, n = 24). Cheilocystidea sparse, bulbous or fingered.

Habitat

June: Growing beside hardwood log in semi-cultivated border beside back gate. Sept: In short grass behind half-moon border.
