Appearance

Small clustered fungus with purple-red colouration. Cap conical, to 25 cm diameter with darker apex and paler striated margin. Gills adnate-emarginate, off-white in colour; edge not coloured. Stem slender, smooth, hollow, purple-red in colour, with white hyphae at base; up to 70 mm long by less than 2 mm diameter. Cap flesh when cut exudes a dark blood-red liquid. Spore print white. Spores (above, a) rotundly oval with apiculus, smooth, amyloid; 7.7-10.0 x 5.6-6.0 um, mean = 8.4 x 5.8 um, N = 20. Cheilocystidia (b, c) lageniform with long narrow neck and pointed tip, common. Pleurocystidia (d) rare and similar to cheilocystidia.

Habitat

Growing from rotting hartdwood branch stacked by garage.
