Appearance

Small, elegant, with tall slender stem. Cap 1 cm wide, domed with a pale brown centre from which radiate thin bands; remnants of veil attach around the edge of the cap. gills adnate with off-white sides and white edge. Stem long and rather stiff, 60 x 2 mm; pale near cap becoming brownish towards base; upper part with fine white flecks; base a short white fibrous root attatched at its tip to a twig. Spore print unsucessful. Spores a very dark brown in Metzer's; ellipsoidal with a large terminal germ pore at one end and with thick walls; 11.0-12.0 x 5.5-6.8 um, mean 11.5 x 6.3, N = 15: Qav = 1.8. Cheilocystidia abundant; mostly fusiform with a long pointed distal part and no crystals at the tip, but with occasional lageniform forms and set amongst paracystidia; filled with yellow staining mucoid material. Pleurocystidia similar in form but sparser. Identification tentative as 'distinctive' unpleasant odour not detected.

Habitat

A single individual growing from a partly buried twig fragment under the cut-leaf beech tree.
