Pale brittlestem

Appearance

Cap 2 cm in diameter; off-white in colour in field drying to a light tan; high domed in profile with slightly inturned edge; surface smooth and dry, wrinkled around the edge. Gills adnate, with rather a long attachment to stem; brown in colour; rather dense with about 40 reaching the stem. Stem 5 cm in length and 3 mm in diameter; hollow; surface smooth and off-white; brittle (on bending the stem quickly snaps with an audible crack); fibrous only close to the base.

Spore print black. Spores oval, smooth-surfaced and with an obvious germ-pore; thick-walled; 7.5-9.0 x 4.5-5.0 um; very few containing large lipid inclusions. Dextrinoid - staining a strong reddish brown in Melzer's reagent.

Habitat

In shade amongst spring flowers (few flowered leek) under the cut leaf beech; growing amongst leaf litter.
