Appearance

Small cups up to 20 mm in diameter with a smooth scarlet-red hymenium and pale, pink-tinged outer surface with a short stalk up to 6 mm in length. The stalk attaches to a rotting twig. Outer surface with tiny hairs (hand lens) that become more apparent on the stalk. Asci 8-spored with spores uniserial and no apical apparatus. Spores ellipsoidal with rounded ends; 28-32 x 9 um; interior oil droplets small and dispersed. External hairs simple; never coiled into a spiral.

Habitat

Cluster of 4 cups growing on small decomposing twig in wooded area at front under the holly trees (2023). [Also found on old railway line at Sprouston]
