Cap bun-shaped; olive grey in colour with a cracked surface revealing white flesh. Lower surface sulphur yellow; gills decurrant; becoming blue when bruised. Stalk pale, slightly red near top but otherwise uncoloured; bulbous at base. When cut cap flesh uncoloured but stalk taking on a blood-red hue. Spores amyloid with distinctly truncated end; 13-14.8 x 4.8-5.8 um (mean = 13.9 x 5.2 um, N = 18). Usually attacked by fungus.
Growing in soil underneath the cut-leaf beech (Fagus sylvestris laciniata) and in grass just beyond .
