Plants and animals of Pointfield

An informal survey of the plant and animal life living in or visiting the grounds of Pointfield, Kelso since 2015

Molluscs: slugs

Irish yellow slug

Limacus maculatus

Appearance

Large yellow-brown mottled slug. The distinction between L. maculatus, the Irish yellow slug and L. flavus the Yellow slug is difficult and probably needs microscopic examination. However, the Irish yellow slug is generally a darker and more green body colour and the yellow spots more numerous and spread further round the body towards the sole. There is no continuous light-coloured band along the dorsum or at the base immediately above the sole, as is found in the Yellow slug.

Habitat and sightings

Found under logs around the garden, and inside the lid of the water butt.
