Diagnostic features

Rootstock stout, dies back over winter with regrowth in spring. Lowest pinna on branch the longest and fronds thus triangular. Lowest pinnule on loewest pinna large and resembling whole pinna from more distal parts. Pinnule lobes with short thorn at tips esepcially around outer part. Scales at base of stalk usually have dark red centres.

Habitat

At various places around the garden, notably in fernery, and outside kitchen.
