Diagnostic features

Rootstock stout, basket-like, giving rise to many long leaves whose rachus is covered in brown scales along almost half of its length. Pinnae at base only slightly shorter than those half way up. Pinnae with strongly toothed leaflets (pinnules); these being narrow and ending in a bristle-like spine. The basal leaflet asymmetric and mitton-like with the 'thumb' on the inside and parallel to the stem. Basal pinnules nearest the rachis are stalked and the base of the pinnule is broad and obtuse (in P. aculeatum the basal pinnules are not stalked and have an acute base). Spore cases on outer half of frond pinnules only. Remains green all year.
