Grey waxcap

Cuphophyllus fornicatus


Appearance

Cap 2 cm in diameter; domed, grey or with a yellow tinge and slimy without radial banding; greasy to touch. Gills emarginate to slightly decurrent; grey and quite dense for a waxcap. Stalk to 5 cm and 4-5 mm wide; dry and fibrillose with longitudinal striping. Spore print white. Spores ellipsoidal, smooth-walled, without germ pore; 6.7-8.2 x 3.4-4.0 um, mean 7.0 x 3.7 um, n = 21; Qav = 1.9. No cystidia.

Easily distinguished from the other grey-caped mushroom here, Gliophorus irrigatus, by its dry stem.

Habitat

Waxcap meadow; occasional.
