Fungi

Red-edged brittlestem

Psathyrella prona

Appearance

Cap hygrophanous, white when dry, yellowish brown at centre when moist; conical to 2 cm wide; without any radial banding evident. Gills adnate; white, but staining black from the centre; gill lamellae with dark-red edge. Stem to 45 x 2 mm; white; no obvious rooting developed at base; smooth; darker at base. Spore print a dark purplish-brown. Spores brown, ellipsoidal with large terminal pore and no apiculus; thick-walled; 12.5-13.5 x 6.4-6.9 um, mean 13.0 x 6.6 um, N = 15; Qav = 2.0. Cheilocystidia not seen; gill edge of pyriform cells only; pleurocystidia sparse and fusiform.

The pale very hydrophanic nature of the cap, lack of cheilocystidia, and the substrate (grass, rather than woody debris) distinguish this from P. corrugis.

Habitat

A small group of individuals growing in grass just beyond the canopy of the cut-leaf beech.
